Appleford – a catering and wedding site in Villanova on the Main Line
Formal gardens, a rambling country farm house with antiques, a terrace and a tent, trees, small ponds, a stream.

Appleford a country house for events and weddings in suburban Philadelphia

Tucked away at the end of a long tree-lined drive, historic Appleford is the quintessential Main Line country estate.

Surrounded by 24 picturesque acres, the sprawling fieldstone home is a handsome example of early Pennsylvania farmhouse architecture dating back more than 300 years. The property, originally part of a land grant from William Penn, is carefully maintained as an arboretum and bird sanctuary. With its blossoming trees and boxwood gardens, stone walls and clear streams, Appleford provides a serene sense of beauty in every season.

Over the years, the house steadily evolved from several simple farm-type buildings joined together into a striking example of old style regional masonry with fine antique furnishing.
The beautiful acreage surrounding Appleford was transformed under the direction of acclaimed Philadelphia landscape architect Thomas Sears. From the woods and meadows, he created a series of lush formal gardens, brick walkways and rhododendron tracts, set off by a stream, pond and waterfall. Gardens can be enjoyed from every window of the house; each vista holds an air of enchantment and distinguished charm.

Up to 200 guests may be accommodated for a seated dinner on the tented terrace. The house, which can accommodate up to 140 guests depending upon the type of event, is available year-round. Total capacity for use of the tented terrace and the house is 200 guests. The tent is in-place over the terrace from April through November. Also available are a three-room bride’s suite and handsome groom’s room for the wedding parties.

an appleford banquet

Who
An American professional and a wood-worker Swede. They planned everything. Expected and got 190 guests to celebrate their wedding.

Where
At Appleford Mansion in Villanova. Ceremony was over the stream ; we built a Japanese bridge for them to be married on. Guests surrounded the stream side – all standing except for chairs for the grandmoms. No, no one complained. – too much fun! The reception followed on the lawns and then under the porch awning.

…………………..

Style
The guests are greeted with ice tea and lemonade station by the stream, under a market umbrella.

All the hors d’oeuvres are butlered to the small cocktail areas set up in corners of the garden.

A violinist from the band is strolling to the areas.

Dinner is at long banquet tables and is served Table d’hôte or family style.
This will give everyone lots of opportunity to talk and get together as they pass their trays of food amongst themselves.

The banquet tables put more people closer together so that it’s much easier to talk, tell jokes, pour wine, serve a spoonful of sweet potatoes. The sense of a European family celebration is enhance by the long tables seating up to eighteen guests. Lots of fun and energy – not always just from the freely flowing vodka.

Music
The band was a full “wedding” band including a singer. The leader puts the band together for us from session musicians so that the cost is less than half that is the norm. Great players who know just what will be the right tempo to keep the dance floor humming.

Look
Keeping the costs down, we do displays of epi French loaves on the tables with sheaves of country wild flowers cinched with raffia ties on both the dining tables (long banquet, rectangular tables) and the garden hors d’oeuvres stations set on round wrought irons tables. Appleford was itself used uniquely – the stream crossing, small corners of nearby gardens. Ivory, simple, cotton linen with Bavarian bone china with a shell silverware.

Budget
Needed to be under control as the couple were paying for the entire wedding.
By planning the wedding on Friday night, several thousand dollars were saved. Since many guests were coming from Europe, there was no absolute requirement to make it a weekend and, therefore, more costly wedding.

Elaine’s and David’s Wedding Reception
at Bartram’s Gardens

The reason that Elaine and David are having their wedding reception here, at Bartram’s Gardens in Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River, is that a natural spirit of learning, an aura of Quaker wisdom, still lives on here today.

These meadows, ancient stone buildings, brick courtyards are a fine world in which to commit to the future of that outside world – the one we see in the lit Liberty Places’ zig-zags of earthbound lightning arching over the wildflower meadow I’m in. Imagine a beautiful that lies juts a miles from center city Philadelphia.

Time to Get to Work
Gary – the catering supervisor – is calling from the wooded dell. Time to leave my hide-out.

David and Elaine have a sense of spatial adventure and are planning to move the guests through the night in a way that will surprise and enchant. They’re not just planning a reception in the gardens but have arranged, with us, a traveling party that moves from place to place. – with a different food and drink experience at each place.

Greeted by the gowned and black tied couple along a pathway through the trees to the dell, the guests will have already picked up a glass of champagne by the tractor gate next to the 18th -century stone barn.

They can stop further down in the woods for a game of croquet or let the next champagne station fizz them on to the clutches of the siren saxophone that they’ve heard soloing since they got out of their car.

The soprano sax is under the white marquee in the dell where baskets of grilled portabella focaccia with fresh herbs and an Oregon Chardonnay (Elaine’s home state) – await.

Pied Piper Pipes the Guests from Station to Station and Station and another four to go.

When the guests have splayed themselves and glasses over the grass, the pied piper sax will muster the guests to the Yellowwood tree and it’s salty fruit of piles of steamed clams. The frozen vodka will pave the way and it’s bottles, wrapped in ice and wildflower shrouds, are laid out in a cooler awaiting their moment.

Then it will be on to the dovecote with margaritas and roasted vegetable tortillas jostling for attention in the brick courtyard underfoot.

With a riff on the blues band guitar the guests will be beckoned around the corner to the rough stone barn for hot dancing and a hot grill buffet.

What will happen tonight is all that.

Style

Country romance and mystery, with relationships coming to the fore. Guests working together, being together in expansive and “enlightening” surroundings. No chairs, few tables, use blankets, pillows, candles, kerosene lanterns, – the sounds of the birds, the light of the fireflies. A nature walk for anyone who wants to go and a treasure hunt for all. The staff were dressed in white jeans, grey T-shirts, and sandals.

Music

None for the ceremony in the “magic circle”. Later on a country fiddler will come from the woods and be joined about every 15 minutes by his mates and will make up a rip-roaring bluegrass group. Dancing on the grass.

Budget

No strictures on cost, yet the wedding was not at all expensive. We had to have more staff on hand to move the wedding inside and re-set with tables and chairs if the weather should turn threatening. We did not want extra staff visible to the guests so they were all paid a guarantee and given the night off.
